At this time over 3 billion people are daily cooking on bio-fuels. Every year some 3.5 billion tons of forest (a forest area measuring seven times the size of Switserland) is burned as firewood for cooking puposes.
Deforestation for firewood already causes:
-global warming/climate change
-loss of biodiversity
-loss of habitat
-soil erosion and denitrification
-loss of natural forest medicine
-loss of food growing trees and
-loss of building material
-loss of tourism
In many developing countries like Haiti there is almost total
desertification caused by firewood use for cooking. This is
clearly visible on this satellite image of the border area
between the green forest covered Dominican Republic on
the right and the barren Haiti on the left. .
